Advice From Patient Advocate Diane Talbert

DO YOU KNOW WHAT MAKES A GOOD PATIENT ADVOCATE FOR YOUR COMMUNITY?

What I’ve Learned From Being an Advocate

I have been advocating for a while now.

  • I believed you just need a great attitude.
  • You have to have a ear to hear. We need to listen. This is what is missing. The doctors don’t hear us, the healthcare system doesn’t hear us. Patients need support.
  • Do your research, You can’t be of much help if you don’t know what you’re talking about. Read several  articles to get a good idea on the subject.
  • Get out there and network. You can’t help people if they don’t know about you. Lobby if you have too.

Tips on Finding a Good Patient Advocate

Remember we are not doctors, so I never offer any medical advice.

Pick people who have the same vision as you do. Someone who has experience in advocating in the same issues you are dealing with. You never have to do this alone. There’s a whole community of people who want to help.
